Warren H. Wheelock, Ed.D.
Warren Wheelock is Professor Emeritus, The University of Missouri-Kansas City. He served as Professor of Education and Director of the Reading Clinic in the Language and Literacy Group of the University of Missouri-Kansas City for 40 years (1967–2007), where he taught graduate and credentialing courses in the diagnosis and correction of reading disorders.
He received his Ed.D. in Reading and Clinical Psychology at Arizona State University, where he conducted his dissertation research in the 1960s under the mentorship of Nicholas J. Silvaroli (deceased). Wheelock and Silvaroli formed a life-long collaboration in the field of Reading Education, together addressing teacher education, migrant education and the diagnosis of reading disabilities.
A former elementary school teacher and school psychologist, Wheelock has co-authored a variety of reading texts with Nicholas Silvaroli as well as reading series with other leaders in the field of reading education to promote high-interest and accessible materials for students with reading barriers.
Wheelock personally has conducted 3,000 reading case studies in private practice, and he supervised over 2,800 clinic case studies for the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
With his background in both Reading Education and Psychology, Wheelock also has served as a court-appointed forensic examiner and expert witness in the field of education for the courts and school districts. He has conducted clinical evaluations and testified in 70 felony cases, 40 of which were capital crimes, and he has testified in other civic cases establishing the importance and impact of literacy and learning capacities on the safety of consumer products.
In 1995, the Warren H. Wheelock Reading Education scholarship was endowed at the University of Missouri – Kansas City by Robert B. Rogers, President of the Ewing M. Kauffman Foundation, in honor of Wheelock’s clinical work and service to students with dyslexia and severe reading disorders.
Warren Wheelock is married to Connie Campbell, with whom he collaborates in the field of literacy.
Connie J. Campbell, Ph.D.
Connie Campbell specializes in learning innovation and organizational systems to advance literacy, development and creativity. Campbell received her Ph.D. in Reading Education and Psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she met her husband and collaborator, Warren Wheelock.
She has been a national innovator in the field of education and teacher in-service for more than 25 years through her leadership roles in educational non-profits, for-profits and civic policy positions.
These roles include President of The Learning Exchange and Founding CEO of the national educational company, Experiencia, Inc., where she advanced Immersive Learning® systems based on constructivist teaching strategies and collaborative learning environments that are vivid, memorable, interactive and personalized. Over 1 million students participated in Immersive Learning simulations and literacy systems under Campbell’s leadership.
In addition to her educational systems management and leadership roles, Connie has a professional educational background as a reading teacher, university researcher and consultant in reading and experiential learning program development, implementation and evaluation. She has consulted for universities, school districts, the US Department of Education, national publishing companies, national nonprofits, corporate foundations and the National Science Foundation. She has advised major corporations including BMA, Hallmark Cards, Sprint, Honeywell, Aventis, and Binney & Smith on curriculum products and community service programming.
Campbell has served as a gubernatorial appointee to the Missouri Coordinating Board of Higher Education, the state department that oversees the budgets and policies for all Missouri state colleges and universities. She also has worked closely with the United Way non-profit community, state school associations, state departments of education, community colleges, service organizations, professional education groups and workforce development initiatives of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, American Humanics, Inc. and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Nicholas J. Silvaroli
1930–1995
Dr. Silvaroli, late of Arizona State University, was a long-standing leader in the area of diagnosis and treatment of reading disorder. With Warren Wheelock, Silvaroli spent his professional life addressing teacher education, migrant education and the diagnosis of reading disabilities. The 11th edition is dedicated to the wisdom and knowledge of this reknown educator.
